Will BCCI-ICL row hit India’s NZ tour?

Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 5:03 pm

The BCCI-Indian Cricket League row has hit India’s extreme expedition of New Zealand once again. The bone of contention is the presence of ICL player Craig McMillan who is set for a stint in the commentary box for the 2nd Test against India.

McMillan, who led Royal Bengal Tigers team in the ICL, has been asked to commentate in the second Test from March 26 in the absence of Ravi Shastri, who will miss it for personal reasons. The BCCI is not impressed with the decision.

Indian Premier League’s official bradcasters Sony Entertainment who also hold the rights of all cricket televised out of New Zealand have approached Sky Sports regarding the McMillan situation.

Refusing to bow down to pressure, Sky have said that they will not be bullied by the broadcasting giant Sony and will continue their assosiation with Macca, a move which is set to further complicate the delicate situation.

Acting Executive Producer (Cricket) for Sky TV, James Cameron said, “I have told Sony that Craig could be in the mix for the second Test because I have a hole in the team but Ive not heard back from them. I dont like the idea of us being told who we can and cant use. Macca is really keen, and at the moment he is with us to get up to speed and there is no doubt he will be in the mix.”

Earlier in the tour, BCCI had prevented Sachin Tendulkar from playing in a T20 exhibition match that also featured former ICL player Hamish Marshall. But now with the powerful broadcasters Sky and Sony slugging it out over rebel McMillan.

Sky TV has refused to delete Craig MacMillan’s name from the list of commentators for the
India-New Zealand Test series and has made it clear that despite his links with the rebel Indian Cricket League, he will be in the box for the second Test in Napier.
