Winter snow storms bury parts of US

Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 10:12 am

Cold weather spread across the United States on Monday (December 22) with thick blankets of snow covering many parts of the North-East.

In the North-East and West, temperatures dropped significantly. People shovelled snow to clear their driveways and free their cars. Many people in the city were left digging out from underneath the large snow banks left behind by the plows. In New Hampshire and Washington state the weight of the snow caused the roofs of two buildings to collapse.

In parts of New England, winter weather caused power outages. “The damage was extraordinary, some parts of the distribution system were wrecked,” said George Gantz of the Unitil Power Company.

In places like Bangor, Maine, homes and cars were buried in at least a foot of snow after a nor’easter storm struck late Sunday into early Monday morning.
