Zardari, Karzai For Joint Action Against Al QaedaISTANBUL (Agencies): President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan said his country and Pakistan have agreed to draw up a joint strategy in the battle against Al-Qaeda. After meeting President Asif Ali Zardari in Istanbul, Karzai said: “We have decided to draw up a joint strategy to fight Al-Qaeda and other terrorist organisations.”
Pakistan and Afghanistan vowed to evolve a joint strategy to combat terrorism, work for regional peace, security and stability, while burying the past differences.
The pledge came at the end of a day-long summit, on the initiative of Turkey, that reviewed in detail the state of existing ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan and discussed ways to forge closer bonds.
The trilateral meeting between President Zardari, President Karzai and President Abdullah Gul in the historic city of Istanbul was held at the venue chosen along the Bosphorus Straits, overlooking the bridge linking Europe with Asia.
Addressing a joint Press conference, along with the two leaders, President Zardari said Pakistan too was a victim of terrorism. The President replied in negative when asked whether Pakistan’s direction in the war against terror will change following the tense situation between Pakistan and India.
“Not at all”, President Zardari said and added “we will continue with our efforts in this regard.” He said Pakistan was also conducting investigation on its own regarding the Mumbai blasts. He said Pakistan has not yet been provided any evidence regarding these blasts.
The summit also strongly condemned the Mumbai attacks and expressed the resolve to continue joint efforts against terrorism.
President Abdullah Gul when asked if his country would play a mediatory role between Pakistan and India said he hoped there would be a transparent investigation into the tragic incident.
President Hamid Karzai said both Pakistan and Afghanistan were seriously affected by the scourge of terrorism and would continue their efforts to jointly combat it.
